What Is the McKenzie MDT Method?

The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT)® is an internationally recognised method for the assessment and treatment of spinal and limb pain, developed by New Zealand physiotherapist Robin McKenzie. It has been widely used around the world for more than 30 years. MDT therapists are trained to assess and diagnose all areas of the musculoskeletal system. This means that if a problem is present in or around the spine, joints, or muscles, an MDT assessment may be appropriate. The McKenzie MDT Method is a therapeutic exercise system based on the patient’s active involvement and supported by reliable scientific principles. Its most important feature is the initial assessment, which provides a safe and reliable way to establish an accurate diagnosis. Only after this assessment is the appropriate treatment plan created. Expensive diagnostic tests, such as MRI scans, are often unnecessary. MDT therapists with an international certification are able to quickly determine whether the method is likely to be effective for each individual patient. MDT is a comprehensive therapy based on scientific and reliable principles, which can be applied very successfully when fully understood and followed.
